Languages
Burkina Faso is no longer a colony of France, yet French remains the official language of Burkina Faso. Indigenous African languages (Mossi, Fula, Dyula) are more commonly spoken than French. These indigenous languages are classified as Sudanic languages, a term used to define languages spoken from Ethiopia to Senegal. Ten percent of the population speak French, while 90 percent speaks an indigenous language. Throughout colonization and afterwards, Burkina Faso has still maintained its cultural ties, resisting Westernization.
Religion
About 61.5 percent of the population is Muslim. Muslims brought their religion to Africa after fleeing persecution to the Arabic Peninsula. Less than 24 percent of Burkinabe are Roman Catholic and 15.2 percent are other religions.
